The MBTA Communities Act & Reading
Supporting the South Main Street Option (Article 16)
We are a group of Reading residents who recognize the opportunity the MBTA Communities Act provides and its importance to the future of the town. We support the Business-D (Main Street) Article 16 zoning proposal.
The zoning updates in the Business-D (Main Street) proposal will improve housing diversity and affordability in Reading. An increase in housing diversity will help teachers live in the same community where they work, young adults settle near family and friends, and seniors remain in town long after retirement. Reading’s Community Planning and Development Commission has worked hard to propose a plan that thoughtfully considers the needs and desires of the broader Reading community. This plan keeps Reading eligible for certain state funding and takes advantage of the updated zoning to support current and future residents and businesses.
We strongly believe the town should vote to adopt the Main Street option (Article 16) to comply with the law. However, we also understand that new directions can lead to questions and concerns. We have taken the time to provide an additional resident-focused resource to help answer questions we have heard or we have had ourselves. Please see our FAQ and additional resource links or feel free to reach out.
Converting Business A1 and A3 to Business D will enable mixed-use in Business D. Features include:
Connected corridor supports local businesses and access to public transit
Promotes housing with minimal unit compliance
Preserves single-family housing in Reading
This plan can be found here on the town website.
